Topic 10: Get back to work

Stage your return to work

Listen to audio

Mel’s advice: It was a good 14 months, before I went back to work. I had an occupational therapist who assessed me first. It was very staged: a couple of hours a day, three days a week and then I’d step it up a bit every few weeks or so. Reading and writing were still an issue for me when I went back to work. I changed jobs in the end, but I’m back to pretty much what I used to do.

Be honest and let people know

Abdul’s advice: I have always worked and love what he do. You have to be honest sometimes things are going to be different. This used to make me very upset and talking, opening up, helped me. At work, there is no need for me to talk a lot with others to do what I need to do. I also don’t need to do things quickly. They let me have time. Colleagues know I have had a stroke. I feel I need to be honest with people and let them know.

Don't stay late to get things done

Listen to audio

Scott’s advice: It took me a little bit longer to do things and I was staying late to try and get things done. But actually I realised that if I gave myself a deadline that I had to leave on time, I was more efficient in the time that I had at work. And it gave me more time for recreation outside of work.
